Detransition, Baby is a smart and provocative novel asking what kinds of futures trans women can imagine for themselves. Reese and Amy were living happily as a couple in New York City, and hoping for a baby but when Amy detransitioned, deciding that the dangers of living openly were too immense, they split up and lost touch. Three years later, Ames is sleeping with his boss Katrina and gets her pregnant, and Ames wonders if they - all three together - might, at last, have their shot at motherhood and family. The book is also an interesting look at subcultures for trans women, models of spiritual or familial care that elders provide, and rituals for mourning and loss.
